Abilify - Basic Information


Indication of Abilify:

Abilify (Aripiprazole) is an antipsychotic drug used in the treatment of schizophrenia.

Action of Abilify:

It is unknown how Abilify acts in the body. However, it is apparent that Abilify has very different activities on the Schizophrenia as compared to other drugs available for Schizophrenia treatment. It has been proposed that Abilify binds partially to dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors in the brain and promotes the action of the receptors. Abilify also has full inhibition effect on serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. Abilify can be given orally and food does not affect its absorption. It is metabolized by the liver and excreted via urine and faeces. Effects of Abilify can be seen after 2 weeks of dosing. Generally, Abilify can be used safely in most populations including the elderly and those with poor liver and kidney functions.

Dose Advice of Abilify:

The daily recommended dose for Abilify is between 15mg and 30mg. The dose maybe increased up to 30mg/day after 2 weeks depending on your clinical response. Abilify may cause dizziness. Do not operate machineries or perform tasks that may affect your mental alertness while taking Abilify until you know how it affects you.

Common side effects of Abilify:

Headache, Somnolence, Akathisia, Light-headedness, Nausea and vomiting and Constipationare common side effects of Abilify.

Uncommon side effects of Abilify:

Orthostatic Hypotension is a side effect of Abilify with rare incidence of 1 in 1,000 population.
