Asmol uni-dose - Basic Information

 

Indication of Asmol uni-dose:

- Used for acute asthma- Used for symptom relief during maintenance treatment of asthma and other conditions with reversible airways obstruction- Used for protection against exercise induced asthma

Action of Asmol uni-dose:

- Relax bronchial smooth muscle by stimulating beta 2 adrenoreceptors, thus increasing airway diameter- Fast onset of action (5-15 minutes)- Short duration of action (3-6 hours)

Dose Advice of Asmol uni-dose:

Adults- MDI: 100-200mcg (1-2 inhalations) as required or 5-15 minutes before exercise. Repeat 3-4 times daily as necessary.- DPI (Diskhaler, Rotacaps): 200-400mcg (1-2 inhalations) as required or 5-15 minutes before exercise. Repeat 3-4 times daily as necessary.- Neb: 25-5mg. Repeat 3-4 times daily as necessary. (Nebulizers are not recommended for maintenance treatment or treatment of acute asthma in adults or children.. Nebulizers may be used by doctors for treatment of life-threatening asthma)- Oral: 2-4mg 3-4 times daily. (Oral route of administration is rarely used)- Intravenous, subcutaneous or intramuscular routes of administration may be used by doctors in acute severe asthmaChildren- MDI: 100-200mcg (1-2 inhalations) as required or 5-15 minutes before exercise. TremorPalpitationsHeadache

Uncommon side effects of Asmol uni-dose:

- Increased heart rate (which can also lead to paroxysmal tachyarrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation or paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia)- Muscle cramps- Agitation- Hyperactivity in children- Insomnia- Hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar) and hypokalaemia (low blood potassium) when drug taken in high doses
