Indication of Barbloc:
Pindolol is used in the treatment of high blood pressure either alone or in combination with other blood pressure medications. It is also given to prevent attacks of angina and cardiac arrhythmias (abnormal rhythms of the heart). It is also used to slow the heart down in patients with atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation.
Action of Barbloc:
Pindolol is a non-selective beta-blocker that blocks beta-adrenergic receptors in the heart causing slowing of the heart rate and reduced force of contractions of the heart cardiac contraction. This decreased the heart?s demand for oxygen as it is not having to work as hard. During an attack of angina the oxygen supply to the heart is not adequate and by giving Pindolol and reducing the hearts demand for oxygen, angina is less likely to occur. The mechanism by which Pindolol reduces blood pressure is unknown.
Dose Advice of Barbloc:
Dosage should be adjusted to suit the individual requirements of the patient. Hypertension: The usual dose is 15 mg per day and doses range from 10 to 30 mg daily. Doses less than or equal to 15 mg can be given as a once daily dose in the morning. Doses greater than 15 mg should be divided into two or three equal doses per day. In more severely hypertensive patients or in those who dont respond to Pindolol alone other antihypertensive drugs may need to be added Angina pectoris. 7.5 - 20 mg is given daily, divided into three equal doses. Cardiac arrhythmias: 15 to 30 mg is given daily, divided into three equal doses. Functional hyperadrenergic cardiac disturbances: 10 to 20 mg daily is given once daily.
