Indication of Daunorubicin Injection:

Daunorubicin is used in the treatment of: - Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.- Acute myeloid leukaemia. - Neuroblastoma. - Rhabdomyosarcoma. - AIDS-related Kaposis sarcoma. - Chronic myeloid leukaemia. There are two forms of Daunorubicin - conventional and liposomal. Liposomal daunorubicin is used for AIDS-related Kaposis sarcoma, the conventional form is used for other indications

Action of Daunorubicin Injection:

Daunorubicin has several mechanisms of action. It inhibits DNA and RNA synthesis, prevents repair of damaged DNA and produces peroxide and free radicals all of which contribute to its effect on tumour cells. Daunorubicin also suppresses the immune system

Dose Advice of Daunorubicin Injection:

Conventional Daunorubicin: Specialist protocols should be consulted Liposomal Daunorubicin: An initial dose of 40 mg/m2 intravenously is given. Further doses depend on the individual patients clinical response and side effects.The recommended total cumulative doses are: Adults: 550 mg/m2 Elderly: 400-450 mg/m2Children older than 2 years: 300 mg/m2Children younger than 2 years: 300 mg/m2If liposomal daunorubicin is used higher cumulative doses may be tolerated but left ventricular ejection fraction needs to be monitored

Common side effects of Daunorubicin Injection:

Conventional Daunorubicin: - Bone marrow suppression.- Mouth ulceration.- Inflammation of the oesophagus.- Nausea.- Vomiting.- Hair loss.- Red urine.- Increased sensitivity of skin to light.Liposomal Daunorubicin: - Bone marrow suppression.- Mouth ulceration.- Inflammation of the oesophagus.- Nausea.- Vomiting.- Hair loss.- Red urine.- Back pain.- Flushing. - Chest tightness.- Increased sensitivity of skin to light.

Uncommon side effects of Daunorubicin Injection:

Liposomal Daunorubicin: - Nerve damage.- Seizures.- Hallucinations.
