Famvir is used for the following viral infections: Cold sores: an infection, usually on the lips, caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 Symptoms include blistering of lips and/or mouth, with burning and pain. The first infection occurs earlier in life and becomes active again, causing recurrent outbreaks.Shingles: a condition caused by varicella zoster, a type of herpes virus that also causes chicken pox. Symptoms include a painful rash with burning and blisters. After the initial chicken pox infection, the virus becomes active again and causes shingles.Genital herpes: a viral infection, caused by herpes simplex 1 or 2, that is transmitted through sexual contact. Symptoms include burning, tingling and itching, followed by blisters. These occur around the genital area.
