Indication of Fentanyl:

Fentanyl is used in the treatment of acute pain and to depress breathing in patients being ventilated It may also be given as an infusion under the skin in palliative care patients who have intolerable side effects from morphine.

Action of Fentanyl:

Fentanyl is an opioid medication. Opioids act on opioid receptors in the nervous system to reduce the sensation of pain. As well as relieving pain, Fentanyl also decreases breathing and causes constipation.

Dose Advice of Fentanyl:

Dosing for anaesthesia: Doses will vary with the age and clinical condition of the patient.Adults: Spontaneous ventilation: 50-100 micrograms intravenously, then 25-50 micrograms as required Assisted ventilation: 50 micrograms - 35 mg intravenously, then 50-200 micrograms as required Children: Spontaneous ventilation: 2-5 micrograms/kg intravenously, then 1 microgram/kg as required Assisted ventilation: 2-5 micrograms/kg intravenously, then 1-3 micrograms/kg as required For longer surgical procedures an initial dose of 10-20 micrograms/kg intravenously should be used Patient-controlled analgesia: 0.5-15 micrograms/kg/hour given as an intravenous infusion however this dose may vary depending on hospital protocols.
