Genoptic - Basic Information

 

Indication of Genoptic:

Genoptic is a medication used to treat infections of the eye and surrounding structures caused by susceptible bacteria.  Common types of infections include conjunctivitis, keratitis and keratoconjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, blepharitis and blepharoconjunctivitis, acute meibomianitis and dacryocystitis. It is also used as prophylaxis after surgery. 

Action of Genoptic:

Genoptic belongs to a group of antibiotic called aminoglycosides. It works by interrupting the production of bacterial protein which is the key to bacterial survival.

Dose Advice of Genoptic:

Dose information: Instil 1-2 drops into the affected eye/s every 4 hours. You should apply gentle pressure to tear duct(s) following adinistration of Genoptic eye drops to ensure the drop(s) is/are not absorbed into your systems.You should avoid touching the dropper tip to any surface. Unused Genoptic eye drops should be discarded 28 days after opening.Contraindications: You should not use Genoptic eye drop if you have or have had allergy to active ingredients of Genoptic eye drop, gentamicin.Precautions: You must tell your doctor if youare pregnant or intend to become pregnantare breastfeeding are taking any other medicines, including herbal products and over the counter products that you buy without a prescription from your pharmacy, supermarket and health food storeUse in pregnancy (Category D): Safety has not been established regarding the use of Genoptic eye drops during pregnancy. You should let your doctor know if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant. Lactation: It is not clear about the potential harmful effects of Genoptic eye drops on your babies. You should discuss with your doctor if you are breastfeeding or intend to breastfeed

Common side effects of Genoptic:

All medicines have side effects. Most commonly the side effects are minor, however some can be more serious. Usually the benefits of taking a medication outweigh the associated side effects. Your doctor would have considered these side effects before starting you on Genoptic.Common side effects are those which occur in more than 1% of patients given Genoptic. These include: eye irritationskeratitis

Uncommon side effects of Genoptic:

Side effects which occur in less than 1% of patients given Genoptic are considered uncommon. Patients do not necessarily experience any of these side effects, so do not become alarmed by this list: overgrowth of fungirasheshivesswelling of the lips, face, mouth or throatdifficulty swallowing or breathingIf you experience any of the listed side effects, or any other symptoms which appear abnormal or unusual, please tell your doctor.
