Glyceryl Trinitrate for Injection - Basic Information

Indication of Glyceryl Trinitrate for Injection (DBL):

Glyceryl Trinitrate is used in the following settings: Blood pressure control during and after surgery.Hypertension can be seen with surgical procedures such as intratracheal intubation, anaesthesia, skin incision, sternotomy and cardiac bypass.GTN can be used to produce low blood pressure, which may be needed during certain neurosurgical and orthopaedic procedures.Heart failure and heart attack.Treatment of angina in patients who have not responded to other medications.

Action of Glyceryl Trinitrate for Injection (DBL):

GTN causes the blood vessels to dilate. This action reduces the amount of work that the heart needs to do, reduces the hearts oxygen requirements, and lowers the blood pressure.GTN takes 1-2 minutes to work after intravenous administrationThe action of GTN following a single intravenous dose lasts for 3-5 minutes.

Dose Advice of Glyceryl Trinitrate for Injection (DBL):

Dosage is affected by the type of containers and administration sets used: If nonabsorbable tubing is used: The initial dose of GTN should be 5 microgram/minute delivered at an exact constant rate. The dose may be increased by 5 microgram/minute increments, with increases every 3-5 minutes. If no response is seen at 20 microgram/minute, the dose may be increased by increments of 10 and later 20 microgram/minute. Once a partial effect on the blood pressure response is seen the amount the dose is increased by should be reduced and the time interval between dose increases should be increased There are great variations in individual patients response to GTN so continuous monitoring is necessary to determine the correct dose in each patient.
