Haldol Decanoate
Haldol Decanoate - Basic Information
- GN: Haloperidol decanoate
- Con: Schizophrenia
- Cla: Conventional antipsychotics
Indication of Haldol Decanoate:
Haldol decanoate is a long acting form of the drug haloperidol, which is used as long-term therapy of psychoses and schizophrenia in chronic psychotic patients.Action of Haldol Decanoate:
Haloperidol decanoate belongs to a group of medicines known as the butyrophenone antipsychotics. It acts by blocking a variety of receptors in the brain, particularly dopamine receptors. Dopamine is involved in transmitting signals between brain cells. When there is an excess amount of dopamine in the brain it causes over-stimulation of dopamine receptors. These receptors normally act to modify behaviour and over-stimulation may result in psychotic illness. Haloperidol blocks these receptors and stops them becoming over-stimulated, thereby helping to control psychotic illness.Haloperidol decanoate has been prepared as an oily injection which relases the medicine slowly over a period of 4 weeks. This is known as a depot injection.Dose Advice of Haldol Decanoate:
Haldol decanoate should be administered by an intramuscular injection into the buttocks. The recommended interval between doses is 4 weeks. The starting dose of Haldol decanoate should be 10-15 times the patients previous daily dose of oral haloperidol. However, the maximum initial dose should be no more than 100mg. A lower initial dose is recommended and then the dose can be gradually adjusted according to response. Close clinical supervision is recommended during the initial period of dose adjustment in order to minimize side effects.Schedule of Haldol Decanoate:
