Lisinopril - Basic Information

Indication of Lisinopril:

Lisinopril is a drug used in the treatment of mild to moderate hypertension; congestive heart failure; and in patients who have suffered from a heart attack.

Action of Lisinopril:

Lisinopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor which blocks the production of a hormone (chemical signal carried in the blood) called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a chemical that is made by the body, which narrows blood vessels and thereby maintains (and elevates) blood pressure. ACE is important for the formation of angiotensin II. When ACE is blocked by lisinopril, angiotensin cannot be converted into its active form, angiotensin II, and blood pressure falls (due to relaxation and widening of the arteries). Lowering the blood pressure puts less strain on the heart and therefore lisinopril improves the pumping efficiency of the heart and is used to treat patients with heart failure. In some patients who have had a heart attack, lisinopril helps the heart to recover and helps to prevent later complications such as heart failure or weakness of the heart muscle.

Dose Advice of Lisinopril:

Lisinopril may be taken with or without food. Essential hypertension.Without a diuretic: initially the recommended dose is 5-10mg as a single daily dose. The recommended maintenance dose is 10-20mg as a single daily dose. This should be adjusted at 2-4 week intervals according to response. With a diuretic: the recommended initial dose is 25mg. Then increase to 5mg as a single daily dose. Congestive Heart Failure. The recommended starting dose is 25mg as a single daily dose (in addition to diuretic). The usual effective range is 5-20mg as a single daily dose. The dose can be increased by maximum 10mg at intervals greater than or equal to 2 weeks. Acute MI. The recommended initial dose is 25-5mg/day. This should be gradually increased up to maximum dose of 10mg/day.
