Parnate - Basic Information

 

Indication of Parnate:

Major depression (second line)

Action of Parnate:

Irreversible, non-selective inhibition of the enzymes, monoamine oxidase-A and monoamine oxidase-B. This action leads to elevation of synaptic concentrations of adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin in the brain and other tissues. The duration of action is 2-3 weeks while new enzymes form

Dose Advice of Parnate:

20-40mg daily in 2 or 3 divided doses. Reduce to lowest effective dose for maintenance once a response is obtained Maximum 60mg daily

Uncommon side effects of Parnate:

ItchRashSweatingBlurred visionPeripheral oedemaManiaHypertensive crisis (tyramine or medication interactions)- patients should promptly report headaches or other unusual symptoms to their doctor. Stop taking the medicine immediately if palpitations or severe headache occur and seek medical attention urgently
