Remicade - Basic Information

 

Indication of Remicade:

Infliximab is used in the following conditions: Rheumatoid arthritis.Ankylosing spondylitis.Moderate to severe Crohns disease.Draining of fistulae between the bowel and the skin in patients with Crohns disease.

Action of Remicade:

A substance made by the immune system called tumour necrosis factor alfa (TNF-a) is an underlying cause of inflammatory diseases. Infliximab works by blocking the production of TNF-a, and in doing so reduces pain and inflammation.

Dose Advice of Remicade:

For use in adults (studies have not been done in children).IV administration: Dilute required dose in 250mL sodium chloride 0.9%, infuse over 2 hours.For administration under supervision of a clinician experienced in the management of the above conditions.Patients should be observed for at least two hours post-infusion for side effects.Rheumatoid arthritis (adults): Should be given in combination with methotrexate. Initially 3 mg/kg IV infusion over 2 hours, followed by an additional 3 mg/kg infusion dose at weeks 2 and 6 after the first infusion, then every 8 weeks thereafter.Crohns disease: 5 mg/kg given as a single intravenous infusion over a two hour period as an induction regimen at weeks 0, 2 and 6 followed by a maintenance regimen of 5 mg/kg every 8 weeks thereafter.Ankylosing spondylitis: 5 mg/kg given as an intravenous infusion over a two hour period followed by additional 5 mg/kg infusion doses at weeks 2 and 6 after the first infusion, then every 6 weeks thereafter.

Common side effects of Remicade:

In clinical trials the majority of side effects to infliximab were mild to moderate in severity, with infusion relation reactions being among the most common side effects reported Infusion related reactions include: Flushing.Headache.Dizziness.Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.Fever.Tiredness.Itch or rash.Chest pains.Breathlessness.

Uncommon side effects of Remicade:

Back pain.Bloody or cloudy urine. (haematuria)Problems with blood pressure. Soreness or irritation of mouth or tongue. White patches in mouth and/or on tongue.Sudden numbness and weakness in the arms and legs. Development of Anti-dsDNA antibodies.
