Tazac - Basic Information

 

Indication of Tazac:

Tazac is used in the treatment of acute gastric and duodenal ulceration. It can also be used in the maintenance treatment of duodenal ulcer for a period of up to one year.Tazac is also used in the treatment of erosive and ulcerative oesophagitis due to reflux, and helps with the symptoms of heartburn and indigestion.Treatment with H2-receptor antagonists is usually reserved for cases where simple antacid medication has been tried and failed

Action of Tazac:

Ulcers in the stomach and duodenum are caused (or worsened) by too much acid in the stomach. Tazac is a drug that blocks acid production by special cells in the stomach. Reducing the acid helps treat the symptoms of ulcers and reflux, and also helps the ulcers to heal. Tazac is helpful in preventing these problems from coming back as well.

Dose Advice of Tazac:

Active duodenal ulcer-150mg twice daily; or-300mg at bedtimeDuodenal ulcer maintenance therapy-150mg once daily in the evening-a period of no longer than 12 monthsBenign gastric ulcer-150mg twice daily; or-300mg at bedtime-be certain to exclude the diagnosis of gastric malignancy before commencing therapyGastro-oesophageal reflux disease-150mg twice dailyPatients with renal dysfunctionDose depends on creatinine clearance: -between 20 and 50ml/min: 150mg/day-less than 20ml/min: 150mg every two daysFor maintenance therapy for duodenal ulcer: -between 20 and 50ml/min: 150mg every two days-less than 20ml/min: 150mg every 3 days

Common side effects of Tazac:

Tazac has been generally well tolerated, with a more favourable side effect profile than other H2-receptor antagonists.Anaemia and hives were the two major adverse events reported
