Indication of Zithromax:
Zithromax is effective against a wide variety of micro organisms. It is most commonly used for treating respiratory illnesses (pneumonia, throat infections). It is also used in skin and soft tissue infections, Chlamydia and against organisms that often attack HIV positive patients.
Action of Zithromax:
Zithromax has a bacteriostatic action – it prevents the bacteria from growing by binding to components inside the bacterial cell that manufacture proteins. This prevents the normal functioning of the bacteria.
Dose Advice of Zithromax:
- Zithromax is usually taken once per day, at least one hour before or two hours after food, as food affects absorption of the drug. - Adults: sexually transmitted uncomplicated urethritis and cervicitis caused by Chlamydia – 1g stat. Prophylaxis of Mycobacterium avium complex - 1,200 mg taken as a single dose once weekly, either alone or in combination with rifabutin. - Children: Conjunctivitis and trachoma due to Chlamydia trachomatis- 20 mg/kg either as a single dose or once weekly for 3 weeks; Streptococcal pharyngitis and tonsillitis - 10 or 20 mg/kg once daily for three consecutive days providing a total dose of 30 or 60 mg/kg over a three day treatment

Common side effects of Zithromax:
As with any other medication, Zithromax can cause a number of side effects, most of which are likely to be minor and cease when the drug is stopped The more common side effects include: - Nausea and vomiting Diarrhoea Abdominal pain
Uncommon side effects of Zithromax:
Less common side effects include: Rash Dyspepsia (heartburn) Fatigue Cholestatic jaundice (obstruction of the bile duct) Tinnitus (ringing or buzzing inside the ears) increased risk with overdosage.
